Chapter 28

Andrew Edward Coyne

Unsure

Dinner and the wine are both long gone, yet Mary-Beth and I are still glued to the table. In the last three hours, I’ve learned more about her than any woman I’ve met in the last ten years, easily. Maybe ever.

And to my surprise, I’m having so much fucking fun.

Loving 80s and 90s hip-hop might be where our similarities stop.

She sees numbers in color. For me, it’s letters.

She’s never done drugs. It’s been a few years, but I have. Lots of them.

Her go-to drink is a bay breeze. Mine is whiskey.

Her favorite animal is a dog. Mine, obviously, is not.

When making a peanut butter and jelly sandwich, she spreads the peanut butter first, and then puts the butter knife straight into the jelly. I do the jelly first and put the knife straight into the peanut butter.

We argued about that for, like, ten minutes. I’m still convinced I’m right. What psychopath wants peanut butter in their jelly?

Around midnight, we finally move to the couch. Mary-Beth pulls the blinds and throws all the pillows on the floor so she can sit as far away as possible. The dog with the glasses smiles up at me as if to say, “If you get naked, can I watch?”

Mary-Beth kicks it across the room.

We start by arguing about In and Out Burger vs. Shake Shack for fifteen minutes…

“God, Mary-Beth, you’ve got to go back and order it animal style. With fries well done, salt on the side. When we go to California, I’ll help you.”

“What good is a restaurant when half their menu items are part of a secret society?”

Until finally, I sling my arm on the back of the couch and muster the courage to ask the question I’m really wondering.

“Mary, why did you decide to write Swallow Manor?”

She blinks a few times, her long eyelashes fluttering against her freckled-covered cheeks. “I don’t know if it was ever a decision or if it just kind of happened,” she finally says. “I’ve read romance novels for years. When I had the idea for the plot, I started writing and just…never stopped, I guess.”

“You knew you could do it better than anyone else?”

“Ha. I wish.”

“It’s true.”

“Thank you.”

“I’m glad you finally published it.” I smile. How different would my life be now if she hadn’t? “What made you pull the trigger?”

“It was the right time, I guess.”

“What made it the right time?”

“Harper.” Mary-Beth laughs. “And more alcohol than any one-hundred-pound woman should ever consume.”

“I call bullshit.” I sit up a little straighter, creeping my hand across the back of the couch until it’s nearly touching Mary-Beth’s shoulder. “It has to be more than that.”

She toes the yarn at her feet, taking several deep breaths before answering. “Yeah, I guess there was a part of me that wanted to see. See if it was really as good as I hoped it was.”

“It is.” My voice doesn’t leave any room for disagreement. “And now that you know that, why not just own it? Do you really think your books are that bad?”

“I don’t think they’re bad.
